Question by malmsteenrulez: What is better in a cpu computer processor?
What is better, high no. Of cores or high speed ghz — my budget does not allow me to get the best of both! Ill be using audio and sound studio and notation and recording software on this machine
Thanks

For that kind of software I would recommend something with at least two cores and 2.5GHz. Although I would go higher, if possible. I personally have the Intel E5300, and it works absolutely great. Also, for it being released in Q4 of 2008, it’s pretty top notch. I don’t know what your budget is, but that is what I recommend (The two cores @ 2.5GHz) minimum. If you can go more cores or GHz, then that’s great. The more, the better :D. But, be careful. When you get the CPU, monitor your CPU usage (Task manger, etc), and also check the temperature via SpeedFan. If it gets too hot, you might also want to invest in a heatsink/fan that isn’t stock.

Question by : What makes a computer processor better than another?
Is there a measurement of processing power? If so, what is the unit of measurement called?

Best answer:

Answer by Meklar
Processors are often measured in clock speed. For instance, a modern processor might have a clock speed of 3GHz. That means that it is able to perform 3 billion basic operations every second. If you count multiple cores as a single ‘processor’, then the number of cores is also a quantifiable measure of the processor’s capability.

That said, there are other important concerns. Independently of clock speed, a processor’s architecture also has a significant effect on its performance, one which is far harder to quantify. Also, different kinds of tasks have different levels of efficiency, and ultimately, a computer’s processor is almost never using its full potential.

Question by Cody D: How to better understand computer processor speed?
I have an AMD Turion X2 64-bit processor. Its a dual-core and says 2.0 GHZ next to it so does that mean my entire processor is 2.0GHz or each core has processing power of 2.0 GHz?

Best answer:

Answer by bon-gart
It means that each core operates at a speed of 2.0ghz. So, just as an example, if you were to dedicate the first core to Firefox, and the second core to Windows Media Player, each program would have a 2.0ghz processor at it’s disposal.

Dual Core (for that matter, multi-core) processors make multi-tasking easier, by increasing the amount of processing power available to be shared.

end of line
